The Birth of a Dream

The Cascade Team Penning Association was born out of a shared passion for the sport of team penning. In the late 1980's , a group of avid team penners and cattlemen came together with the goal of creating an organization that would provide a platform for enthusiasts to compete, learn, and connect with like-minded individuals.

The Early Years

In its early years, Team penning first appeared in the Willamette Valley around 1985. There was Penning in California and across the southwest to Texas at the time but it was not a very big event at the time anywhere in the country. Over the next 4 years that would all change and Change it did. In 1989 A group of business men from all walks of life got together and saw a common vision for something to grow the sport of Team Penning in the Northwest and with that Cascade Team Penning Association was born. When CTPA was formed, it was decided to be an association rather than a club. By setting it up that way, CTPA could both produce events as well as sanction events for clubs and individuals.

The original board of directors were Alan Loftesness (pres); Art Blair (VP); Gary Linton, John Rosebrook, John Horn and a secretary ( sorry no one can seem to remember her name) I also know that even though they were not board members they also contributed a lot to bringing CTPA together was Paddy McAuliffe (Fort Klamath, Or) and Mike Flynn ( Montana).

Growth and Expansion

In 1990-1992 Team Penning is off and running in the NW with Penning practices running 4-5 times a week at different venues. Cascade Team Penning Association became the dominate penning association in the Northwest with events in Oregon, Washington, California, Montana and Idaho.

1993-1995 CTPA has a membership of about 400, and the CTPA events had close to 600 entries.

1995 CTPA was the Sanctioning body at the Reno Rodeo penning that was run in the Doc Bar arena. More and more people became interested in the sport of team penning, and the association's events started attracting a larger crowd. People from all walks of life ( doctors, nurses, lawyers, car salesman ect) bought a horse and started competing.

The Evolution of Team Penning

The Cascade Team Penning Association played a vital role in shaping the sport of team penning.

When CTPA started they were looking to have consistency of rules, bigger event purses, yearend awards and the ability to grow the sport and have a family atmosphere. CTPA did that beyond what anyone imagined. CTPA introduced innovative rules and regulations that added an element of strategy and skill to the game. These changes not only made team penning more exciting to watch but also encouraged participants to improve their horsemanship and teamwork abilities.

I would also like to say thank you to Alan Loftesness for helping me with the early years facts. I can remember while living at the ranch with Paddy and Hulda, Alan and Mike would show up for a couple days,( Pops, Alan, Mike ) all they talked about was CTPA and how it was going to be great. These men could see the vision.
